Raw-Edges Design Studio Makes LightMass^ Pendants Light as Air

Lightness takes on double meanings in Raw-Edges Design Studio’s LightMass^ collection. First unveiled at London Design Festival 2024, the sculptural pendants resembled airy line drawings suspended in space, their delicate mesh forms intercepting and refracting light. A year later, the studio returns with LightMass^ 2025 – a new iteration that doesn’t just frame illumination but generates it.

Unlike the 2024 debut, where the mesh acted as a surface to catch and play with an external light source, the 2025 evolution houses the LED within the structure itself. By embedding the light directly into the sculptural body, Raw-Edges transforms the mesh into a luminous object in its own right, blurring the boundary between light and matter.

Each piece is crafted using DFM technology, a form of additive 3D printing that eliminates molds – and therefore waste – entirely. Printed directly from digital files, the mesh structures use less material while remaining strong and lightweight. The filament itself is a durable PLA/biopolymer blend that’s 100% bio-based and renewable, reinforcing the studio’s commitment to sustainability. Because the collection relies on a single material, each pendant is also fully recyclable at the end of its life. This balance of precision and restraint makes LightMass^ as sustainable as it is poetic.

To realize this year’s iteration, Raw-Edges rethought the structure entirely. A flat top now discreetly houses the light source, while the mesh has been tailored with varying densities. Tighter lines near the LED soften glare, while the more open weave amplifies the feeling of transparency and weightlessness – a subtle shift that makes the pendants feel even more ethereal. Thanks to the flexibility of the printing process, each pendant can be adapted without the need for molds, offering new shapes, sizes, patterns, and even bespoke colors to suit different spaces.

With its combination of technological precision, sustainable production, and sculptural lightness, it’s no surprise that LightMass^ has already earned major accolades, from the British Design Guild Mark to Elle Decoration’s EDIDA Lighting of the Year award. The 2025 evolution only deepens its impact. For an added layer of poetry, the models are named after their actual mass weight – a nod to both the collection’s lightness and its scientific precision.
